It seems that more and more women are trying to make a change in the world of skincare and beauty. Recently the rise in skincare brands has really risen, each trying to offer the very best in skincare but how do we know that the offered products will work and give us the long-term benefits that we need instead of just results that last a few weeks and then stop working?
Some of you may believe that plastic surgery and other alternative treatments like Botox can be the answer to some of your problems but I have always been a firm believer in ‘GOOD’ skincare. I think we really need to go back to basics and source out individuals who know the industry and find skincare brands that really do have the ingredients that work well and impact our skin.
Paula Begoun also known as ‘The cosmetics cop’ is a US based beauty expert and has been in the industry for 30 years, she has many published books which give its readers extensive knowledge into the beauty industry. Her expertise has lead her to appear on various shows including Oprah, CNN and The today show. She is also a consultant to dermatologists, plastic surgeons, major cosmetic companies and industry insiders. This woman really does sound like the ‘superwoman’ of the beauty industry.
Paula’s new book ‘Don’t go to the cosmetics counter without me’ 8th edition is now available to buy. It delves deep into the beauty industry with a compilation of skincare facts really allowing you to get to grips with how certain products work and how to achieve the best results for your skin type. There is also a section for product reviews and beauty must haves. Some of the titled chapters in the book are ‘Why you need a cosmetics cop!’ ‘The best products’ and ‘How to take the best care of your skin’. I’m not sure about you but I have just added this book to the top of my reading list.
Paula has also launched her own range of skincare called ‘Paula’s Choice’, an in depth range targeting all skin types. A woman with so much experience why wouldn’t she? Over the next few weeks I will be extensively testing Paula’s skincare range and really getting to know her products, I will also be reading her book to see what beauty tips she has for me.

Rendez-vous avec La Lingerie Francaise
Last week I had the pleasure- make that “le plaisir,”- of attending Brill Communication’s annual French Rendez-vous at Wychwood Barns. The event is a socialite-studded runway show which boasts France’s hottest lingerie designers from Passionata to Princess Tam-Tam. The event had all the makings of a successful Brill-esque rendez-vous: there was gorgeous decor, Moet et Chandon and of course girly swag bags.
The heat was a-blazing, (despite the presence of gigantic commercial fans,) but the audience was still packed to the walls. Who could blame us, anyway? A little heat isn’t enough to keep fashion lovers and lingerie model adorers from enjoying the steamy show happening on the runway- although going strapless may have been a good plan. Perhaps next year Brill will make the event a lingerie costume party.
But my very, very favourite part about attending this event? Sitting with the Toronto Football Club- Oh mon dieu.

5 Questions to Ask your Yoga Teacher
Yoga is everywhere these days but before you attend your local Yoga class here are some practical tips for finding the right teacher and enhancing your practice says certified Yoga instructor Salimah Kassim-Lakha.
1. What type of training did they receive?
Basic curriculum includes information about anatomy, study of classical works such as Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras or the 8 Limbs of Yoga, and practicum hours. And what were the examination requirements? Some schools offer graduation to everyone who takes the course, regardless of their personal mastery of the information.
When it comes to Yogic training, more is definitely more. A teacher with more than 1000 hours of training will likely have an area of specialization, such as pre or post natal, yoga for children, or the elderly. A Yoga Therapist will be able to assess your situation and provide you with a course of meditation or movement that will help you reach your goals. Assess your needs and choose your practitioner accordingly.
2. How many hours of experience do they have?
Think about a doctor fresh out of medical school. Even with hours of study and the intention to do good work, experience will be the key to determining his or her success. Experience polishes communication skills, and hones the ability to listen, motivate and inspire. The same is true for a Yoga teacher. Now to be fair, everyone starts somewhere. A new teacher is just as valuable as someone with years of experience. Ask where they have taught and how often, who their students have been and you will get a sense of their experience.
3. What style of Yoga do they teach?
There are literally hundreds of styles of Yoga, each with a different emphasis. For each, you will find a teacher with his or her own method of passing on the teachings. When I was most in need of a personal transformation in my life, I met many Yoga teachers. The person I was most drawn to opened the door to Kundalini Yoga. Kundalini Yoga is a classically taught form of Yoga. The teacher does not demonstrate, and each class involves mantra, movement and meditation. This practice gave me the skills and techniques to break free from limiting beliefs and patterns. Similarly you may be drawn to a particular teacher for a reason. Does he or she exude a quality that you would like to attain? Ask how their Yoga practice compliments who they are as a person. If it resonates with you, take the class and be open to what unfolds.
4. What other training do they have?
This is a nice to have. A Yoga Teacher with a background in kinesiology may be able to guide you through a sequence of movements with an emphasis on body alignment. A teacher who has trained in other healing modalities may be able to provide you with affirmations or complimentary therapies that can boost your Yoga practice. Asking this question will also help you to discover the other skills and talents that your Yoga professional can offer you.
5. How would I best benefit from their class?
This is a trick question. You benefit most by showing up!
But before you do, ask the teacher about their teaching style. Is there a theme to the class or a discussion before or after? Is the class for beginners, advanced or for all levels? Is it mostly physical postures? Does it incorporate meditation and breath work? These questions will help you get a sense of what to expect and how the class will be conducted. Remember that Yoga is more than the physical postures. If you have never meditated before or explored a breathing practice, try it and see what it brings you.
Salimah Kassim-Lakha completed her 500 hour Yoga Teacher Training in Kundalini Yoga in 2006, 200 hours in Sivananda Yoga in 2008 and is a Laughter Yoga leader since 2009. She has 2000 hours of teaching experience worldwide, online and in live class settings. For information on classes and courses visit www.yogavision.com

From Dress Up to Makeup
In silence I watch without blinking as she gracefully sweeps the eyeliner from the inner corner out to the side, she bats her eyes to ensure that the mascara has dried, then one final sweep of blush for that extra glow. Here comes my favorite part, she pulls off the cap, and twists open this scarlet red lipstick, with all the name brands out there today, Revlon is what she cherishes. “It’s the final touch” she says, finishing by blotting her lips against each other, the perfect red to go with the soft ivory silk blouse tucked into her perfectly ironed wide-leg black dress pants; touching the floor giving just the right amount flow to her sexy Nine West sling back sandals revealing her freshly pedicured feet . I watch my mother in awe as she gets ready to go out for the evening, the same thing I’ve done since the age of 5. I lay on her bed, stomach down, feet crossed in the air, hands under my chin like I’m a little girl all over again watching her mother play dress up in hopes that one day I will be just like her, look like her, dress like her, and wear lipstick like her. 21 years later, nothing has changed, well one thing, it’s not dress up anymore, its real life, and now it’s my turn.
Recently at the Anokhi Woman’s Club social event in downtown Toronto I approached Raj Girn, President/CEO of Anokhi Magazine, and asked two questions, “what is that gorgeous coral colour lipstick you are wearing, it has to be the new Lancome?” And “you wear such a daring colour with such grace and confidence, how do you do it.” She flashed me a warm smile, and softly replies “I grew up watching my mom wearing such colours like this and I always said to myself, one day I want to wear that too…by the way, its Revlon.” You could imagine the emotion that rushed to my face as every memory of me as a little girl sitting admiring my mother as she got ready flashed before my eyes.
When does “dressing up” change to an everyday routine?” When did I blossom from that playful little child, to a young fashion and beauty influenced woman? When did fruit flavoured lip glosses that I once got for a birthday present turn into the staple MAC’s Nymphete lip gloss I just can’t go without. Isn’t it funny how many of us grew up watching our mothers, aunts and grandmothers get ready, dress a certain way, and follow a certain beauty routine. We observed them day and night saying “one day I’ll be just like you…when is it my turn to wear it,” but as we started to grow up it slowly turned into “I don’t want to wear that…everyone will make fun of me…”, “you don’t understand fashion mom, all the girls are wearing it…”, “it’s only makeup mom, times have changed…”. And now here we are, mature young independent woman hopeful for the future as we enter the world with so many aspirations, we stand in front of the mirror getting ready, about to apply that lipstick and smile as the memory of our past faintly plays in the reflection in the mirror – we have arrived, we are now the women who we used to watch play “Dress Up.”

Beauty hits & misses at the 2010 Emmy Awards
The 2010 Fall Beauty trends were in full swing at the 2010 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards this past Sunday at the Nokia theater in LA.
The smokey eye, with an emphasis on lashes of course was seen on almost every diva, starlet & newbie on the red carpet, from birthday girl Lea Michele to Claire Danes to newlywed Anna Paquin. Paired with a neutral sexy lip this look was a big hit.
Special mention goes out to one of my fav’s Kim Kardashian who wore an amazing white goddess Marchesa gown and had simply flawless hair & makeup as usual!
When it came to misses at this years awards although not many there were a few. Keri Russel with her prom style hairpiece, lack of lip color and that awesome Pepto Bismol coloured dress that simply did not suit her skintone at all.
Another miss for me was Heidi Klum. I hate to say this since I simply adore HK but her lashes just looked like mascara gone clumpy. Top lashes would have been ok on their own but adding those bottom lashes and white liner just killed the look.
The night went on as Jimmy Fallon hosted and then performed his tribute to the shows we lost this year while impersonating Elton John, Boyz II Men & Green Day – hilarious!
Overall there were more hits than misses on that red carpet and although January Jones blue dress left me questioning how her makeup artist (who did a wonderful job) didn’t say anything to her stylist, at least there weren’t any dresses with images of the president on it a la Victoria Rowell’s2009 Emmy getup.

The Victoria’s Secret Angels have arrived in Canada!
For years one of the big reasons Canadians have put up with the long car rides and even longer border waits was Victoria’s Secret, a lingerie and women’s clothing store that lured us in with practical yet sexy under garments, deliciously scented beauty products and those famous ‘Angels’ pictured above with their “Victoria’s Secret Loves Canada” tees.
Well, Limited Brands, the parent company of Victoria’s Secret and La Senza, has finally listened to the probably millions of requests for a VS store in Canada! This past Thursday the Angels landed in Toronto for the east coasts first flagship store. Although this is the second store in Canada (the first opened just 2 weeks ago at the West Edmonton Mall in Alberta) its still managed to stir up quite the buzz here on the East coast.
Not only will this store carry all the lingerie items Victoria’s Secret is known for but it will also carry their beauty products which will include the popular Beauty Rush cosmetic line, those sweet scented fragrances and body products which as a beauty junkie makes me want to get down to the mall asap to stock up!
Head on over to Yorkdale Mall and check out the 13,549-square-foot store for yourself, the only lines you will be waiting in here is to cash out!

Pretty on Monday, Pretty Grim by Friday!
I wanted to share this little fact I read in the Globe & Mail:
Pretty on Monday, Pretty Grim by Friday
British women spend an average of 76 Minutes on grooming to get ready for work on Mondays and only spend 19 Minutes to get ready for work on Fridays.
Women spend four times as long making sure they look sharp for work at the beginning of the week than they do by the end, according to a survey of 1000 customers of British retail chain Debenhams. Men also let their attention to appearance slide as they week wears on, but over all spend much less time sprucing themselves up, from 28 minutes on Mondays to 11 minutes by Wednesday.
(Globe & Mail, Life Section, June 8th 2010)
Does this ring true for you? Personally, I think I spend more time getting ready as the week progresses! By Friday I am rolling out of bed a tired mess, needing extra time to put rugged self together! And 19 minutes? Who can do all their grooming in 19 minutes? If that’s you, I genuinely applaud you. These days I think I average about 45 minutes for hair and makeup (30 of those minutes on hair), probably another 30 minutes deciding what to wear…so an hour and 15 minutes is just about right. Seriously…19 minutes???? Tell me how???
Nevermind men – can you imagine being able to get ready in 11 minutes? Must be nice…
Although I do have to say, sometimes getting ready in the morning is my favourite part of the day.

Let’s Talk About Hair Shall We?!
Of course we all know every one’s hair is different from the texture to the cut, no ones hair is exactly alike but the one thing most of us have in common is that we lust after healthy beautiful hair.
Here are some healthy hair secrets you can use to get picture perfect hair!
Looking for more shine?
The secret is eggs!!
Try this: Lightly beat two eggs mixed with some milk and run throughout your hair. Leave on for 5 minutes, rinse and you’ll see a shine instantly.
Interestingly enough if you want your pooch to have a shiny coat as well add an egg over their food once a month
Is Dandruff an issue?
Is your dandruff shampoo just not work
ing fast enough?
Try this: Crush 2 aspirins into your dandruff shampoo and watch how fast that dandruff clears up. Be sure to use a good moisturizing conditioner afterward.
Do you have staticy locks?
Does your hair attract static no matter how much hairspray you use?
Try This: Use Static Guard! Spray about 7 inches from your hair lightly. Or try spraying it on your comb or brush and then running it through your hair. Hey it works on fabric why not hair!
Are your greasy strands getting you down?
Here’s a quick fix that you probably have at home!
Try This: Use the baby powder! Rub it into the roots of your dry hair to soak up oils. You don’t have to shower to take out the baby powder, but be sure to shake the excess powder out. Corn starch should work the same way.
Or why not try blotting your scalp with an oil-blotting strip made for the face?!
Looking to add some natural highlights to your hair?
Works best for blonde’s or gals with light brown hair but should work for most shades.
Try This: Add a bit of juice from a freshly squeezed lemon with water and pour into a spray bottle. Before heading out in the sun spray your locks making sure to spray evenly all over. Lemon juice mixed with sunlight will lighten any hair naturally!
Looking for a way to deep clean your scalp and roots?
Try a hair cocktail!
Try This: Add a splash of vodka (YES Vodka) to your bottle of shampoo. The alcohol cleanses the scalp, removes toxins from hair, and stimulates the growth of healthy hair.
Whether you are trying to solve a problem or just improve the overall appearance of your hair these tips and recipes will help you on your path.
Do you have a hair recipe to share?

When Life Hands You Lemons… Beautify Yourself!
Lemons, not just garnish for your fancy drinks or for making lemonade anymore!
Lemons are rich in vitamin C but also contains other important nutrients for our health, for example magnesium, iron, copper, manganese, phosphorus, potassium and zinc. The high proportion of vitamin C is the main reason why lemons can be considered as one of the necessary substances in our daily diet.
Not only are lemons great for your diet and body but they can also be a part of your beauty routine. Lemon juice is a natural antioxidant which helps stimulate collagen production in your skin as well as many other fabulous things.
Here are some examples of how lemons can be used to help everything from your skin to your hair.
Bleach Hair – The all natural alternative to bleach is to use the juice from 1/2 – 1 lemon into your hair. Squeeze it directly into your hair. (Don’t worry if you get some seeds in your hair. You’ll rinse those out later!) Sit in the sun for 25 minutes. Shampoo and condition as usual. If your hair is light colored, you will see more blonde highlights. If you have darker hair, you will notice some nice red tones.
Oily Skin Toner – Combine 2 tablespoons lemon juice, 2 tablespoons vodka, 1 tablespoon distilled water, and 1 teaspoon witch hazel. Apply with cotton balls to your skin, then rinse. This mixture will keep in the refrigerator for a week and can really help your oily skin woes!
Body Purifier – Lemon water is also a great detoxifier for your body. Be sure to wash lemon thoroughly to clear of any bacteria on skin.
Lighten & Soften Elbows: You can also rub cut lemons directly on elbows to lighten lighten and soften them.
For Soft Silky Hair: Apply warm/hot oil and lemon juice to your scalp and wrap for 30 minutes before thoroughly rinsing.
Help Blemishes: Combine and blend a few drops of lemon juice with enough plain yogurt to cover face. Allow to blend 30 minutes before applying to clean skin.
Remove Blackheads – Rub lemon juice over the areas that contain blackheads right before you go to bed. Rinse your face with cool water when you wake up. Repeat this every night until blackheads are dissolved and gone.
And the list goes on….
Lemons provide many health benefits. When mixing or creating homemade formulas be sure to use caution as allergies, sensitivities, or other reactions may occur. A test patch is a good idea especially when using these ingredients on your face.
Using these lemon beauty tips you can save money on beauty products by simply making them yourself. The ingredients in lemons are highly beneficial and are a natural way to enhance your inner beauty!

Do you have a favourite scented body cream that was perhaps discontinued or costs an arm and a leg to purchase?
Want to find a way to make it last longer?
Here’s a quick and easy solution!
Simply add a tiny drop of your favourite scented lotion with a larger portion of unscented lotion, mix together and voila!
Using this method I was able to cover my entire body with my favourite scent by actually only using 1/3 of what I would have other wise!

On Dress-Up Parties
heather and I at the Rethink Romp
Back at work today, around the proverbial water cooler (of course, we don’t have a water cooler; We have an espresso machine) my friend Heather told me about a party she had attended over the weekend. I responded, “Ohyeah me too.” But she wasn’t referring to any old party- Heather had gone to a Mad Men theme party, and I was instantly jealous.
Hiding my jealousy behind a mask of mild intrigue, I asked her to elaborate. First off, the party was for designer Jessica Biffi’s birthday, so the genius-idea kudos go to her. From looking at the photos, I can testify that the outfits were spectacular. There were short leather gloves; men’s skinny suits and of course bee hives. The sexy sixties were well-represented by an enthusiastic group of Torontonians on Friday night.
This got me thinking about other theme parties I would like to attend. At the top of my list are a masqurade ball; a superhero party and a moustache party- all of which I have heard of before and didnt make up.. just for the record.
I have been to the standard university shindigs: No-pants parties; 80’s prom parties; and saran wrap costume parties among them, But generally there is a lack of effort and creativity on the part of the guests (probably because we were all poor students.) Halloween seems to be the only time anybody goes all-out. That’s not true of the rest of the world, however. Friends in the UK have told me that every birthday is a “fancy dress party,” which friends participate in so rigorously that they don’t really care to celebrate Halloween. Jealous!
Two weeks ago I got my wish: I attended an awesome Superhero party to benefit Breast Cancer research! It was put on by the ladies down at Rethink Breast Cancer and included pink champagne, yummy snacks, and a professional photo booth. The best thing about the whole night was that everyone played along! Rethink Breast Cancer apparently always throws fancy-dress parties, so I for one plan on being at the top of their guest list every time.
Have you ever attended a theme party where you got to dress-up and be someone else for the night?

Beauty Spotlight: Ryan Turner Make’s over our Hair!
As beauty editor of GF I was slightly embarrassed turning up at the Osolé salon with my hair in the state that it was. Needless to say I was in dire need of a trim and intense hydrating treatment.
In my desperate bid to grow my curly fro I had steered clear of any hairdressers cutting scissors but nay it was time to snip. The split ends had to go.
After having heard great things about the salon I decided to pay a visit and it was just as beautiful as described. With gold framed mirrors and light stone walls embellishing the space – this serenity in the city is gorgeous. I was almost convinced I’d stepped into Tuscany.
The talented 20 year old hair stylist, Ryan Turner fingers through my dried out tresses and tells me what he can do to save it. It seems as though he’s been in the industry for decades.
Turner begins by using one of my favourite products—Kerastase Bain Volumactiveshampoo ($34.00). This shampoo truly is incredible for fine damaged hair and will leave the hair full and with a mirror like shine.
“This line is amazing, it repairs, rebuilds, reconstructs and volumizes. The good thing about Kerastase is that all their shampoos are colour friendly. This green packaged line (Resistance) is great for improving the texture of your hair.” Says Turner
“I’m going to do an in salon treatment by Kerastase ($25.00) and we’ll take it from there.” Says Turner.
As he applies the treatment he begins to braid it into my hair whilst telling me about his history.
“When I was 10 I saw my mom do a French braid and I was amazed. I love braids…
I started when I was in theatre school. My friend and I started doing the hair and make-up for the shows. The first time I became serious was when I was 16 and attended a school that offered a cosmetology program. From there I went to another program as the teachers saw me excelling quickly.” he says as he puts the last braid in.
“I like to braid a treatment in I think it lets the product soak in more.”
He continues to tell me about his views on hair styling.
“I think first and foremost my client has to leave with a lesson on how to achieve the look I create. I want them to recreate the look at home and show off my work. They’re like my walking billboard.
When I do color on a client I like to give them something that they redo when they want, not when the have to.”
“I’m treating your hair as though it is two different heads of hair. I’m treating the ends with Ciment Thermique; a heat activated leave-in conditioner for weakened hair .” ($39)
Turner begins to take a few cuts into my hair but before doing so asks me if it’s okay to take ‘this’ much off. I rejoice inside–finally a hairdresser who checks before snipping. When he’s done he rakes his fingers through my hair and wanders off into focus. “Perfect” he says, whilst staring at my hair.
He begins the drying by using a paddle brush with the blow dryer to partially dry my hair. Turner then sections my hair into 4 parts and continues to take a large boar-bristle brush to the first segment. He makes it a vital part of his service to explain every step he takes to the client. Educating me on my hair throughout the session.
“Make sure when you are blow drying, that you dry upwards. This gives more volume.”
Once my hair is dry Turner finishes with Kerastase Lumiere Nutri-Sculpt finishing serum ($40) and Volumactiv Spray ($40). Again pulling the hair upwards as he styles.
The result? Bouncy, shiny hair. My hair has never been softer and I can’t stop touching it.
Before: Dry and Brittle!
After: Shiny luscious locks full of volume!

Sabrina Savoy: Proprietress of Pretty Bird Originals (and All-Around Nice Gal)
I met the lovely Sabrina Savoy during LG Fashion week. We were both stuck rushing through our drinks outside of the media lounge- trying to enjoy but also painfully aware of the looming deadlines that awaited us.
Sabrina and I got to talking, and I learned that not only is she a fabulous photographer but she also makes her own jewelery- Her line is called Pretty Bird Originals. Sabrina was exceptionally pleasant: She wound up inviting me to join her at the Yoga in Motion Marathon and was kind enough to put me on the list as her guest at a recent Burlesque party. Ow oww.
This brand of kindess is hard to find in people these days so I was thrilled to have the chance to get to know Sabrina and her jewelery line through an interview. . Make that friendly conversation.
Katelyn: Where do you draw inspiration from?
Sabrina: I get my inspiration from clothing. I love going through rockabilly, pin up,
and vintage online shops. I don’t focus just on making Rockabilly
jewelry but that’s what inspires me the most.
K: What career path did you aspire to follow before you made jewelery? How did it develop
into the role you’re in today?
S: Well, I thought I was going to be a photographer. I studied it at Sheridan College and
thought I’d be shooting for
Vogue and Glamour by now. I’m actually lucky to have photography in my background,
it’s very convenient
once I’ve made a bunch of products I just set everything up and shoot it.
It’s great! I don’t have to hire anyone.
K: What materials do you love to work with?
S: When I’m making jewelry I really love working with more expensive materials, which isnt
always a good thing. I just love the shine and sparkle of
Swarovski crystals, the feel and texture of fresh water pearls, and the weight and
vibrations from natural stones.
When I’m making hair pieces; ribbons, feathers, and whatever I can get my hands
on usually works best.
K: What kind of woman do you have in mind when you’re designing?
S: I have every women in mind when I’m creating Pretty Bird products.
I have pieces for every age group and every genre.
K: What is the origin of Pretty Bird?
S: I’ve made jewelry my whole life. Thanks to kimp and string that started it all.
After graduating from Sheridan
I started selling at shows with a friend of mine who also made jewelry and from there I started to
venture out and book
more shows and events. I even do private parties.
I’ve met some really loyal clients from this.
K: What kind of environment inspires you to create your best work?
S: The only thing I need to have when I’m making jewelry is a good mood.
I have to be feeling well and happy to create.
I don’t need any other bells and whistles.
